Art Process

My artistic process is at the heart of my vision. The way that I immerse myself in the water is essential to and guides my creative choices. The time I spend in a place deepens my ability to see the beauty through the horrifying state of our waters and lands. I have walked the rivers for years creating photographs and learning where to paint and print in shoreline open-air studios. I arrive at these places with only my canvas or photograph, and an offering of water. Every visit the inks and tools I find are different. I draw and print with dead snake corpses, a river log printing press, sediment from commodity farms, four seasons of time, headwaters, a lead pipe and the pace and flow of the water, to name just a few. Through this process the unseen truth and beauty of our relationship with water emerges. I ache at times as a stand in the river making art and look around another brutalized landscape. I also know the real dangers lurking in the water are hidden. This practice of seeing and creating beauty in this way is transformative, freeing and an honor.
